Dental veneers transform a smile, but the placement process raises legitimate questions. Here is, step by step, what really happens from the initial consultation to your new smile.

Step 1 : Diagnosis and first consultation

Before talking about veneers, the dentist reviews your whole mouth :

  • Are there cavities or inflamed gums ? Treat first.
  • Is there bruxism (teeth grinding) ? Plan a night guard before and after.
  • Is the bite healthy ? If badly disordered, you may need orthodontics first.
  • What is your real goal ? Subtle change or significant transformation ?

This consultation is necessary. Without clear diagnosis, no veneers will last.

Step 2 : Digital Smile Design (DSD)

If veneers are a good option, we move to Digital Smile Design :

  • Photos of your face and mouth.
  • Intraoral 3D scan.
  • Computer design of how your new smile would look.
  • Validation with you : we modify shape, length, colour, proportions until you are satisfied with the design.

This stage is KEY : once you validate, we know exactly where we are going. Without DSD, veneers are a surprise at the end of the process (and not always a good one).

Step 3 : Tooth preparation

Depends on the type of veneer :

Porcelain veneers

  • Very small enamel preparation (0.3 to 0.7 mm) so the veneer fits without protruding and looks natural.
  • With modern techniques (ultra-thin Lumineers-type), sometimes no reduction needed.
  • Done with local anaesthetic if there is any discomfort.
  • Precise impressions (digital scan).

Composite veneers

  • No reduction (or very minimal).
  • Usually no anaesthetic.
  • Material applied directly on the tooth, hand-shaped.

Step 4 : Temporary veneers (porcelain only)

For porcelain, while the lab fabricates your final veneers (1-2 weeks), you wear temporary veneers :

  • Let you test your new smile in daily life.
  • Let you eat and speak normally.
  • If anything is not right (length, shape), it can still be adjusted before the definitive version.

This moment is the “suit fitting”. Use it.

Step 5 : Final cementation

The most awaited appointment : the final veneers arrive from the lab and are cemented to the teeth.

  • Deep cleaning and surface preparation.
  • Adhesive and precision cementation.
  • Final polishing.
  • Bite and phonetics check.

You leave with your new smile. The session lasts 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the number of veneers.

Step 6 : Review and care

At 7-15 days, a quick review to :

  • Verify everything is well-seated.
  • Review the gum (sometimes takes time to adapt to the new edge).
  • Give you specific hygiene advice.
  • Adjust the bite if needed.

What hurts (and what does not)

  • Anaesthetic injection : mild prick. Almost no one remembers the next day.
  • Enamel preparation : with anaesthetic, does NOT hurt.
  • Temporaries : possible mild cold sensitivity for a few days. Normal.
  • Final cementation : does not hurt. Sometimes mild pressure from adhesive force, but no pain.
  • First weeks : possible cold sensitivity, fades in 1-2 weeks.

Maintenance (the part that depends on you)

A well-placed veneer can last 10-15+ years. To achieve it :

  • Impeccable daily hygiene (brush + floss).
  • Check-ups every 6 months.
  • Night guard if you have bruxism (non-negotiable).
  • Do not use teeth as tools (opening packages, biting ice).
  • Periodic professional cleaning.

How long does the whole process take

From first consultation to final cementation :

  • Porcelain veneers : 3-4 weeks (with lab fabrication).
  • Composite veneers : 1 visit of 1-3 hours depending on the number.

For UK patients : trip planning

The 2-visit protocol for porcelain veneers (1-2 weeks apart) means a typical trip arrangement :

  • Trip 1 (2-3 days) : consultation + DSD + preparation + temporaries placed. You fly home with temporaries.
  • Trip 2 (1-2 days) : final placement.

Many UK patients align the gap between visits with their own travel schedule. We are flexible.
